Treating Internalized Shame: A Therapist Workshop

This presentation explores sources of sexual shame from societal, religious and traumatic factors that affect our clients. Lecture and case examples will facilitate the participant to understand the internalization of shame from such influences and the impacts it can have on self-esteem, attachment and quality of life. Unpacking direct and indirect life experiences paves the way for clinicians to help clients recognize the role of shame in their life, and freedom from it.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand self-objectification theory including societal contributors to its development and maintenance

  • Identify religious paradigms that might contribute to sexual shame creating body/value conflict

  •  Discuss impacts of traumatic experiences in sexual shame internalization
